Re:Zero Season 4 Episode 7 – Japanese Fans Process Subaru's Memory Loss Cliffhanger

Overview

The Re:Zero Season 4 Episode 7 dropped a series-defining cliffhanger: Subaru loses all his memories at the Pleiades Watchtower and reverts to the innocent Arc 1 personality — the convenience-store-walking-home Subaru with no knowledge of Return by Death, his accomplishments, or any of the bonds he's built across four seasons.

This article translates Japanese fan reactions from the active 5ch 'Return by Death #182' thread following the broadcast. Discussion centers on: theory-crafting about Shamak magic's role and its possible connection to Subaru's Earth origins, Gluttony authority mechanics (if Gluttony ate his memories why isn't he comatose like Crusch?), the pacing critique (some viewers comparing the fatigue of weekly time-loop episodes to a Dragon Ball-style stretching), and intense anticipation for Julius's reaction next week to discovering the only person who remembered him has now forgotten.

All the skills and experience he's built up so far have been completely wasted. It's like going all the way to a mid-boss and then being reset to Level 1.

2:AnonymousID:AnonymousMay 21, 2026 13:18

I thought 'why doesn't he just Return by Death before losing his memory,' but if he's lost his memory, he doesn't even know about the Return by Death ability. Now it's the people he's built trust with who have to help Subaru. Also a chance for Julius/Emilia to win over his heart.

3:AnonymousID:AnonymousMay 21, 2026 13:51

From Subaru's perspective: he walks out of a convenience store, finds himself in another world, and everyone around him knows nothing about him but is showing intense trust. That's terrifying. When they tell him his own accomplishments he'll think 'who the hell is that guy?' Viewers know it's the result of countless Return by Death iterations finding the right answer, but Subaru himself doesn't.

We Emilia camp viewers and the audience have been numb to it, but objectively Subaru is the most suspicious person in this story. Echidna's reaction is the normal one.

6:AnonymousID:AnonymousMay 21, 2026 12:14

- Witch-stench heavy - Weak but weirdly perceptive - Always shows up at critical moments - Has mysterious info from unknown sources Yep, suspicious.

I always wondered why Subaru places such absolute trust in Shamak magic. In Season 2, Beako used Al Shamak to trap Mega Rabbit in a different dimension — but Re:Zero world doesn't have a concept of 'isekai/other world' so that's actually an incredibly anomalous magic. My theory: Flugel = isekai-transmigrated Natsuki Subaru, and Shamak somehow connects to his original Japan-side past self.

8:AnonymousID:AnonymousMay 21, 2026 10:44

Shamak is the only magic Subaru could use through his own strength. So he places absolute trust in it. Conversely Shamak is all he could do alone — everything else (Return by Death etc.) is borrowed power.

10:AnonymousID:AnonymousMay 21, 2026 11:14

Beako was protected from Gluttony's authority while in the Forbidden Library, but the moment she left, she became vulnerable. So to remain protected from Gluttony, you need continuous exposure to Shamak's 'separation' property.

11:AnonymousID:AnonymousMay 21, 2026 10:11

For amnesia, it's weird that he still has memories up to 'walking home from the convenience store.'

9:AnonymousID:AnonymousMay 21, 2026 11:09

The theory could be: he was hit by Shamak-type magic at THAT point in time, so memories up to that moment were spared from being eaten.

12:AnonymousID:AnonymousMay 21, 2026 10:43

I've been mostly satisfied since Season 4 started. As someone who loves the feeling of puzzle pieces slowly clicking into place, this kind of pacing speaks to me. I get the frustration that nothing dramatic is happening yet, but I'm hyped because something feels imminent next week.

13:AnonymousID:AnonymousMay 21, 2026 10:26

It's not that the story is boring — it's that the direction/staging isn't great. Season 1 was so good because even casual conversation scenes had clever staging that stuck with viewers; you never felt like it was dragging.

14:AnonymousID:AnonymousMay 21, 2026 12:19

A bumbling, awkward man who keeps saying weird things and acting strangely... from the in-universe characters' perspective, he's basically a Kurd causing trouble in Kawaguchi (a notorious Japanese immigration issue).

>>12 I dropped off the manga right at this part. Memory loss and rebuilding relationships from scratch wore me down. Watched it through to the end but it became 'fine, whatever.' Hope the anime breezes through this part.

16:AnonymousID:AnonymousMay 21, 2026 17:41

>>14 With a book you can power through in one sitting. With weekly anime, you get fatigued and drop off. Might be fun to binge-watch later after it's all over.

18:AnonymousID:AnonymousMay 21, 2026 18:13

>>12 Maybe just me, but binge-watching doesn't stick in my memory. Weekly viewing actually sticks better. Several years later when reminiscing — but I know plenty of people who feel the opposite.

19:AnonymousID:AnonymousMay 21, 2026 18:35

>>16 Julius's reaction to amnesia-Subaru next week... can't wait. (sob)

20:AnonymousID:AnonymousMay 21, 2026 21:02

Spoiler analysis: Subaru read Reid's death book in the library. Various things happened and Gluttony's sister ate his memory. Gluttony-sister split her power: one part is currently controlling Subaru. That's the truth of amnesia-Subaru.

21:AnonymousID:AnonymousMay 21, 2026 21:22

>>14 Why spoil. Either you have a 'know-it-all flex' need or you live such an unfulfilling daily life. Pathetic.

22:AnonymousID:AnonymousMay 21, 2026 22:11

>>16 From here Julius probably has a 'I have to help Subaru recover his memories' arc. When you want to do a 'doing it for someone you love' story, it works better if you make them enemies first to heighten the eventual payoff.

25:AnonymousID:AnonymousMay 21, 2026 22:15

Subaru was confused about why Julius accepted Shaula's reasoning so easily — could that be foreshadowing for something?

26:AnonymousID:AnonymousMay 21, 2026 15:17

I'm curious about Echidna's situation. I assumed Echidna's true form is the fox stole, and that she can see and hear what's happening around. If so, she'd know Subaru's character well by now and shouldn't be this scared of him. Unless she's the type to remain cautious and always verify even with close allies... but Beako shows human-like emotions, so for a spirit too...

27:AnonymousID:AnonymousMay 21, 2026 15:48

>>26 If I were Echidna I'd be terrified of Subaru. She's stuck unwillingly using Anastasia's body and wants to give it back ASAP, but even Julius — supposedly on her own camp — is now drawing his sword against her. Meanwhile everyone trusts Subaru entirely based on past achievements, but Subaru clearly doesn't know about Shaula or the monolith, which is obviously wrong but he 'doesn't seem to know.'
